Pascoe Vale Rotarians visit Peace Poles in Japan

Pascoe Vale Rotarians Deborah and Bruno D’Aprano recently returned from a trip to Japan, bringing back not only wonderful memories, but also important reflections on peace, history, and international friendship.

Deborah and Bruno gave a presentation to our club and told us about one of the most moving parts of their trip being a visit to Hiroshima. Like many visitors, they described the experience as emotional and thought-provoking. Walking through the Peace Memorial Park and learning more about the devastating events of 1945 reminded them of the terrible human cost of war and the importance of working toward understanding and peace between nations. The city today stands not only as a reminder of the past, but also as a powerful symbol of reconciliation, healing, and the shared responsibility we all have to promote peace in our communities and around the world.

Another meaningful aspect of their journey was seeing Peace Poles throughout Japan. In Pascoe Vale Rotary, Deborah has been instrumental in our 50 Peace Poles for 50 Years project, with many Peace Poles being ‘planted’ in schools and community space.

Peace Poles carry the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in multiple languages, and are familiar symbols to many Rotarians and peace advocates, representing unity across cultures, faiths, and nations.

Of course, their trip also included enjoying Japan’s beautiful culture, food, gardens, and hospitality. Welcome back Bruno and Deborah!
