Guest speaker: Wildlife carer Dr Robyn Coy

Tonight our Club was privileged to hear from Dr Robyn Coy, dedicated wildlife rescuer and carer, who shared the heartbreaking impact of bushfires on the animals in her care.

Earlier this year, fires destroyed the Tarcombe Wildlife Shelter at Longwood. Dr Coy lost not only her home, but her lab and animal hospital, a training facility and sadly many animals. In the midst of this devastation, she worked tirelessly to search for and care for animals that were orphaned and burnt.

Dr Coy grew up in a large family with a love of animals and nature. Her family endured many bushfires during their time in Healesville before moving closer to Melbourne. Dr Coy eventually became a senior research scientist in biology and zoology, as well as getting a PhD and Doctorate.

We learned about wombat mange, with the mange mite coming from England with foxes, and how it is very difficult to treat, as well as possums becoming ill with exudative dermatitis.

We also learned that wildlife carers are self funded and receive no support from the government. And they work tirelessly, often day and night, responding to and attending to reported incidents. These volunteers are very much under the pump, and do it all on their own. Their commitment and compassion make an incredible difference to the lives of countless animals.

Thank you Dr Coy, for an informative and thought-provoking presentation, and for shining a light on the remarkable work of wildlife rescuers and carers, truly some of our country’s unsung heroes.
