Guest speaker: award winning barista Simon James

Pascoe Vale Rotary Club recently had the pleasure of welcoming Simon James as our guest speaker. Simon very generously gives up his time to work with us on delivering our Barista Basics workshops for young people at Genovese Coffee in Coburg.

Simon is a wealth of information on all things coffee. We were treated to a fantastic presentation, so much so that the non-coffee drinkers are rethinking their next hot beverage!

Some fun facts from Simon’s presentation:
– There are more than 10,000 varieties of Arabica coffee in Ethiopia
– The First Fleet had coffee beans but the beans didn’t survive
– It takes about nine months for a flower to bear fruit
– By 2050 there will be significant issues with Arabica coffee and likely no Arabica by the end of the century due to climate change.
