SPECIAL PROJECTS Youth Without Borders – Spark Engineering Camp
In 2025-2026, Mina, ‘Youth Without Borders’, External Affairs Officer, addressed the club about ‘Youth Without Borders’ and its flagship program – Spark Engineering.
Mina is a keen community volunteer, passionate about improving access to education, and is a former Rotary Interact member of the Rotary Club of Rosanna.
The Rotary Club of Pascoe Vale donated sponsorship funding of $1500 to enable a student to attend this year’s Spark Engineering Camp.
Spark Engineering is an initiative of ‘Youth Without Borders’ that empowers students in years 10 -12 to pursue further education. ‘Youth Without Borders’ aims to provide students from non-traditional and disadvantaged backgrounds, who may face barriers towards tertiary education, with experiences to grow and discover STEM pathways, as well as meet like-minded peers.
The first Spark Engineering Camp began in 2011, developed from the founder of ‘Youth Without Borders’ – Yassim Abdel Maggied. It started as a project to bring together students studying diverse fields of engineering and STEM based disciplines, to give them a life-changing opportunity.
Spark originated in Brisbane in 2011 then expanded its scope in 2014 with the creation of its first Melbourne Camp. Both Camps have successfully run every year since, other than in 2020, due to COVID 19 restrictions.
Every year volunteer staff create an action-packed week of engaging STEM activities at universities around both host cities.
