Cerebral Palsy: Gaby Martinelli

Cerebral Palsy is a life-long condition that effects body movement, muscle control and posture.It is caused by an injury to the developing brain before, during or shortly after birth.

Gaby Martinelle is a little girl with Cerebral Palsy, Displegia, who attends Pascoe Vale North, Primary School. Cerebral Palsy Displegia is a form of bilateral Cerebral Palsy that effects both legs. The arms may be affected but to a lesser extent. Many people with diplegia can walk but with difficult, or, with or without, the use of mobility devices.

The Rotary Cub responded to a request for assistance for Gaby from the Pascoe Vale North Primary whereupon the club contacted Gaby’s mother. Gaby was about to undergo a serious operation to realign her hips, legs and feet. The Club was able to provide a wheelchair and pay for physiotherapy following the surgery. Further physiotherapy sessions and a Heartwell Healthcare program were paid for later.

Gaby attends the Heartwell Foundation which provides physical education, sports skills. fitness, and general well-being. She also attends two session each week at the royal Melbourne Hospital, Parkville.
