SPECIAL PROJECT ‘Cleanevent’ Melbourne Commonwealth Games

Melbourne Commonwealth Games. 15-26 March 2006


The Games Village was constructed on the site of the former Royal Park Psychiatric Hospital In the inner Melbourne suburb of Parkville. It was built to house 6000 participants and officials during the Commonwealth Games.

Following the Games, the individual units will be reconfigured and sold to accommodate around 1000 families. Rotary was given the concession to clean the games village units.

Pascoe Vale Rotarian, Chris Lang arranged the roster of volunteers. Alf Diggerson arranged to transport the volunteers in the Edith Bendall Retirement Village Bus from the RSL Carpark in Cumberland Road to the Flemington Racecourse, and returned them at the end of the day. A bus service ran to deliver the volunteers from Flemington Racecourse to the Games village and return to Flemington.

Rooms cleaned and tided were occupied by the Australian Basketball and Athletics team members. The beds of the Basketballers had to be lengthened due to the height of the Basketballers.

Pascoe Vale RC claimed $15,000 out of District 9790 allocation of $200,000.

A donation of $2000 was made to the Pascoe Vale Boys Club for their involvement in the program.
