Guest speaker: Katrina Naish on textile waste
Our guest speaker this week was Katrina Naish, founder and director of A Fitting Connection, a certified social enterprise tackling the growing issue of textile waste through education, upcycling, and community-driven initiatives. With over 20 years’ experience in the fashion and textile industry, Katrina shared both industry insight and her passion for sustainability.
As part of A Fitting Connection’s umbrella, Katrina also runs The Creative Community Space and The Fabric ReStore, which houses a fabric recovery centre that redirects unused materials back into circulation while modelling circular economy practices. Through her work, Katrina empowers students, volunteers, and organisations to see waste as a resource and become part of the solution.
Katrina shared some sobering facts with us: there are enough clothes in the world now to clothe six generations, and in Australia the clothing waste we throw away can fill Sydney Harbour every year!
Thank you Katrina for sharing your knowledge with us and encouraging us all to rethink our use and disposal of textiles!
